Why BMI Falls Short as a Measure of Health
Transcript
Understanding exactly what your body is made of is one of the most useful things you can do for your long-term health. At Dr Shilpa Dave Health, we offer InBody body composition scanning to give you a clinically accurate picture of your health. The InBody uses a technology called Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis to measure how electrical signals travel through different tissues in your body. Because muscle, fat, bone, and water all conduct electricity differently, the device can calculate the precise proportion of each, broken down by body segment. The scan takes less than two minutes. You stand on the footpads, hold the handgrip electrodes, and the InBody sends low-level signals through your body. These are completely painless and safe. Results are broken down across both arms, both legs, and your trunk. Your InBody report shows total body water, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, visceral fat level, and basal metabolic rate. The segmental analysis is particularly useful — asymmetry between your left and right limbs can highlight imbalances that may increase your risk of injury over time. Clinical validation studies have shown a strong correlation between InBody measurements and DEXA scanning, which is widely regarded as the gold standard for body composition assessment. You can have confidence that your results reflect your body, not a statistical average. An InBody scan can be booked as a standalone appointment or as part of our Platinum Health Screen. To find out more and book your scan, please visit privategp.org or contact the practice directly.
